Rory Block :: AVALON
Multi-award-winning blues singer/guitarist Rory Block fourth CD in her “Mentor Series” is Avalon on Stony Plain Records, a tribute to blues master Mississippi John Hurt. Previous Rory Block salutes have been to Rev. Gary Davis (I Belong to the Band), Mississippi Fred McDowell (Shake ‘em on Down) and Son House (Blues Walkin’ Like a Man).

Like the others before it, on Avalon Rory Block pays a loving reverence to another of the blues greats whose influences have made a major impact on her career path and music. Ten of the 11 tracks on the new CD are songs associated with Hurt’s repertoire; while the lone original tune – which leads off the album – “Everybody Loves John,” is Rory’s personal love letter to the iconic bluesman, name-checking a litany of songs that were a major part of his blues canon.

Many of Hurt’s best known and beloved songs are on Avalon, including “Candy Man,” “Frankie & Albert,” “Got the Blues Can’t be Satisfied,” “Richland Woman Blues,” “Spike Driver Blues,” “Stagolee,” “Make Me a Pallet on Your Floor,” “Pay Day” and the title track, plus other tunes that demonstrate how diverse and significant his contributions were to blues history.

Grand Marquis :: BLUES AND TROUBLE
The swing era lasted a little more than 10 years, but the irresistible rhythmic appeal of the music influenced virtually all subsequent jazz, blues and popular music. A rousing revival in the late 90s spawned Grand Marquis in 1998 in Kansas City, the birthplace of swing. After five landmark albums of vital and timeless music they are hitting their stride with Blues And Trouble, the most exuberant and sheer danceable music of their glorious career seasoned with pungent blues.

12 originals and one cover feature the singular talents of Bryan Redmond (lead vocals, saxes) along with Chad Boydston (trumpet), Ryan Wurtz (guitar), Ben Ruth (upright bass, sousaphone) and Lisa McKenzie (drums, washboard). Tough-guy-poetry kicks off the set before heading to N’Awlins, then on to a minor key 8-bar blues, slinky funk rhythms, sultry 12-bar and the minor blues title track which casts an inky “noir” spell. Continuing is a riff-driven, limber swing, a stunning intro of vocal and guitar in free time which switches from energetic Dixieland to dynamic medium blues, a melancholy, cinematic mambo and a jaunty tribute to a swing dance hall. The Delta gets a visit with slide guitar on moody slow blues, “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On,” swings and boogies followed by a classic Crescent City funeral march. Closing the set is a clever anthem for those following their passion in life.

The greatest music casts a spell, taking the listener on a unique journey for the mind and body. On Blues And Trouble, Grand Marquis conjures a whole world of sights and sounds.

Albert Cummings Wins our Theme Song Contest

On behalf of the BFG Staff we're proud to announce that Albert Cummings is the winner of the Blues Festival Guide Theme Song Contest! We're thrilled that his poignant song, "The Blues Makes Me Feel So Good," will be playing when fans and industry folks are checking out the 2013 BFG Digital Magazine for the next four months. Our digital magazine is linked from our top ranking blues website www.bluesfestivalguide.com. Congratulations Albert!

Albert messaged us and shared, "Tommy Shannon (SRV) and I wrote this song. People love this song and there are a ton of live videos of the crowds yelling, 'Blues Makes me feel so good,' back to me on festival stages. I hope someday it becomes an anthem for spreading the message that blues is a good thing!"

Cummings grew up on a farm in Massachusetts and learned guitar from his father but turned to banjo at age 12. This country boy discovered Stevie Ray Vaughan in high school and couldn't believe his ears. While in college in 1987 he had the chance to see SRV live and returned to the guitar with a new resolve. However, not until he was 27 did Albert finally decide to go for it.

An intense period of wood shedding resulted in Albert sharing a bill with Double Trouble, the late Stevie Ray Vaughan’s rhythm section. So taken with Albert’s fire and passion were bassist Tommy Shannon and drummer Chris Layton that they volunteered to play on and produce his debut recording. In 2003 the aptly-titled, From the Heart (Under the Radar), delivers the awesome power of a Nor’easter and the soul of a natural born artist.

A year later Double Trouble joined Cummings again as he signed with Blind Pig Records to create True to Yourself, with legendary producer Jim Gaines. This album features our new theme song!

In 2006 came the blockbuster Working Man, Cummings and his sixth and latest album, No Regrets, debuted at No. 1 in the U.S. and France iTunes blues charts and No. 5 on Billboard blues charts.
